Senior Handler / Supervisor

1989 – 1990 British Army H.Q. Army Dog Unit Northern Ireland.
Employed as an armed guard dog handler working as part of a team responsible for the physical security of sensitive military installations within the high threat environment of Northern Ireland. Duties included maintenance of dogs, kennels and equipment, armed patrol duties and continuation training.
1990 – 1993 British Army 39 Brigade Specialist Dog Section, Belfast.
Employed as an Arms & Explosive Search Dog Handler, advising on and undertaking, a wide variety of search tasks under high threat operational conditions both in Northern Ireland and mainland UK. Search tasks included high-risk IED clearances, immediate follow up to terrorist incidents, occupied house searches, route clearances and covert searches for special forces units. Has significant experience in high threat defensive searches prior to VIP visits. These included searches for Her Majesty The Queen, Prince of Wales, Princess Anne, Prime Minister John Major and various other high-ranking government officials and visiting heads of state. Also involved in maritime search operations during attachments to the Royal Navy and ‘Comacchio Group’ Royal Marines including searches of dock and harbour facilities, pleasure craft and commercial shipping out at sea.
1993 – 1994 British Army Northern Ireland Training & Advisory Team, NITAT.
Instructor and NCO in charge of the wings specialist dog section. As part of the NITAT team Richard’s responsibility was to train troops prior to Northern Ireland deployment in the operational use of dogs in security operations. This involved preparing and presenting lectures and practical demonstrations for audiences of up to 100 and to the rank of Colonel. As a secondary role Richard also assisted in the set up and running of realistic terrorist incidents designed to test troops reaction and drills. As the NCO in charge of the wings dog section he was responsible for all the relevant paper work including ration accounts, veterinary records and monthly returns, planning and supervision of continuation training for dogs and handlers and maintenance of dogs, kennels and associated equipment, including section vehicles.
